Last Friday I bit the bullet and learned the other lift in my Showcase mambo/samba. I had a lesson with both J and P, and yes, they picked me right up off the floor. Although I had to learn a few tricks to do my part, overall it was not nearly as scary as I thought it would be. The Viennese Waltz I’ve lost some ground on, but we’ll be getting back on that this week. (In related news, the tango I did with J at the guest party went pretty well.)
The rest of the weekend I kept having flashbacks to my teenage years. Friday night I attended a high school football game to watch BF’s daughter’s marching band perform their first half-time show of the school year. Though I was informed that the football field itself was covered in Astroturf, the perfumes of cut grass and a variety of concessions layered over the sounds of referee whistles, crowd cheers and band music brought back four years’ worth of great marching season memories. Saturday evening I went to a community ballroom dance organization’s practice party in a local church gymnasium. I felt like I was back in junior high, sitting on the sideline, waiting to be asked to dance. (And no, I was not brave enough yet to ask the men myself.) I did do some dancing, though, and overall the party was fun; I will go to another one.
As a general rule, I absolutely love weekends. The past few have been especially good. My parents helped me cut down a big Leyland Cypress tree in my yard two weeks ago; it had been planted too close to the house and was causing problems. Actually, Pop cut it down, and Mom and I helped. J On a different night one of my girlfriends organized a GNO — Maroon 5 concert — which was a really awesome time, girl-time and great music boosted by perhaps a bit too much chardonnay. (As an aside, I got two separate thumbs-ups from strangers for dancing in the stands, although I’m not going to examine that too closely as I’m not entirely sure they were compliments!) And this past weekend, in between the events I already described, I accomplished quite a lot around the house, plus I acquired a used elliptical trainer via Craigslist. Very pleased about that.
So I’m already looking forward to the next weekend – work has been challenging in various ways lately, and I feel like I live each week looking forward to the weekends. Somehow though I suspect I’m not the only one…
